1988 Trans-Am Cars Battling At Lime Rock Park Is Worth A Watch

The 1988 Trans-Am season was a great one, turning into a real shootout between vastly different race cars and drivers as diverse as Paul Newman, Walter Röhrl, Hurley Haywood, and Scott Pruett. Thanks to the magic of YouTube, it’s also something you can watch right now with this classic footage from Lime Rock Park.

Featuring great commentary from Brock Yates and Steve Evans, a BMW E30 convertible pacing the field, and a flat-out sprint around one of America’s most beloved circuits is how best I can set it up. But with the dominant Audis recently handicapped before the event in performance to the tune of 1-inch narrower tires, less turbo boost, and more weight, the 200 quattros did much more defending than passing.

“It’s now like a truck,” said Walter Röhrl before he stepped into his car, which had been handicapped by Trans-Am Series after winning five races on the trot.
