Artist Mixes Car Design & High Art to Beautiful Effect

Markus Haub started his career working in Volkswagen and Renault design studios, dream positions for any young artist with petrol in the blood. German-born and an alumni of Transportation Design at the University of Applied Arts in Pforzheim, Markus now resides in Barcelona where he works as an artist and freelance designer.

In 2008 Haub began his “Racing Legends” series of work, the subject of which this article is focused on. Concentrating on racecars of the ’60s and ’70s, a rich and exciting era from which to draw inspiration, Haub’s pieces combine the realism and detailed eye one would expect of a dyed-in-the-wool Petrolista, but with the elegance and impressionistic slant of a true artist, elevating his paintings beyond the somewhat heavy-handed and overly-literal style typified by most automotive-themed artwork. This is attested to by his work’s inclusion in many prestigious shows and galleries throughout Europe, including the incredible Schlumpf Collection, a French national treasure and the largest automotive museum in the world, with more than 120 Ettore-era Bugattis under one spectacular rood.
