Prototypes Prove Legends Came from Dreams

This installment of our new Forum Report feature highlights an incredibly cool thread on prototypes, design studies, and one-off pre-production models. Jam-packed with fascinating period photographs, sketches, and clay models, it provides a stimulating look into the secret history of many classic cars before they ever turned a wheel.

Some of the legendary machines featured include early versions of the 2000GT, Daytona, Miura (one sketch depicting scissor doors!), MkII Skyline, Toronado and even a few Tatras. Though currently only five pages long, it’s full of quality material. We encourage any active Vortex’rs to continue to post, we’d love to see how far it can go and what can be dug up.

Amazing that this prototype is from 1988/1989…with styling way ahead of its time in terms of swoopy ‘coupe-like’ rooflines which have made their way back into fashion these days with cars like the CLS, A7, Grand Coupe and of course, Panamera. This is the ‘Father of the Panamera”, Porsche 989.

And the 989 was derived from the 928 platform.

Scissor doors or a forward tilting canopy roof? I think the latter judging by the height of the sill, but it is not easy to tell from the drawing.
