A few days ago, for the first time ever, the SVRA (Sportscar Vintage Racing Association) put on the Brickyard Vintage Racing Invitational. Over seven hundred (!) cars spanning the history of the automobile gathered at the famed Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Within the menagerie were past Indy 500 winners (pre-war and post-war), Le Mans, Grand Am, NASCAR, Trans Am, and even F1 racers, all gleaming in the infield with owners nearby and happy to answer questions. Gasoline Alley and the garages were open and access was easy. Former Indy 500 racers and champs contested a 45-minute “Indy Legends Charity Pro-am” race held on the road course on Sunday that included a pre-race ‘fan walk’ right before the main event where spectators could walk pit-lane where the cars were staged and meet the drivers. Over the weekend, a total of twelve different racing classes were represented with racing action pretty much going on all day, everyday.

So many incredible cars were in attendance that I’d immediately recognize one and start walking towards it only to be sidetracked by another that was even more beautiful and iconic and I’d have to decide which I was going to check out first. This happened all weekend. There were so many amazing cars literally everywhere I turned. Being surrounded by so many legendary cars, I felt like I was at a Hollywood awards show surrounded by celebrities. Except these were stars that I’d grown up with, adorning old sports car magazines, bedroom walls, and classroom daydreams.

Does anyone know anything about the cream-colored Porsche 356 Speedster shown at the top of the second page? It looks like it might be the car my father sold in Mississippi around 1974, and I’d sure like to where it ended up and what it’s been doing since then. It was like a member of the family, and led to my sister becoming a professional race car driver, and me becoming a race car designer. You can find me on LudemannEngineering.com .

I am so overwhelmed of all the awesome race cars that I can see. Race cars have all the safety equipment and power required to win races and protect their driver at the same time. Just a friendly reminder, always check and recheck both your car’s interior and exterior parts prior to race. It is indeed true that adrenaline rush adds more adventure and excitement in car racing.

Great photos Nate! I felt privileged to attend this inaugural event. So cool to see such a wide variety of epic cars all at one place, get right up next to them and talk to the owners/drivers. The other thing I really liked was that the cars ran on both the road course and on the oval. You could tell that every driver there was incredibly excited to drive their hardware on the Indy tracks. Some were shipping cars and transport trucks in from overseas for the opportunity. Tickets were dirt cheap ($40 for Fri – Sun), crowds were low making it very easy to get close to the action. I’ll definitely go again next year. Here’s a video I took of F1/Indy cars heading from the staging area onto the track…

Thanks, Joe. It was truly one for the books. All of the friends I tried to persuade to attend the event with me were kicking themselves when they saw the photos. As soon as it is announced, I’ll be marking it down on my calendar for next year.

I was actually standing on the stairs across from you while you filmed that. That sound!
