Spring Is Here: Where Will You Drive Your Classic First?

Even though the Petrolicious HQ is located under the eternal sunshine of the California sun, we have lived all over the world and truly miss watching the seasons change right before our eyes.

Months of anticipation lead, inevitably, to one moment: your first springtime drive. Where will you go?

My hometown of Sarnia, Ontario, Canada is located on the Great Lakes, otherwise known as the world’s largest freshwater lakes. Their scale and depth are truly immense, and both fall and winter storms are severe enough to swallow up anything in their path—famously, even the massive 729-ft long SS Edmond Fitzgerald ore freighter and its crew of 29 were victims.

Because of Lake Huron and the weather it shapes, winters can be harsh—so the first signs of spring are often met with unbridled glee. My first tour of the year—every year—is along the St. Clair River Trail (we just call it “River Road”) toward Sarnia, following the river until it meets Lake Huron.

A quick jaunt through town is a good opportunity to grab a snack, and then Lakeshore Road is an enjoyable and scenic lakeside route that stretches almost as far north as you’re willing to go, with the only-an-hour-away city of Grand Bend as the point at which I usually turn around and head home. After months of anticipation, it’s always a treat to drive with the window down, enjoying the smells of beautiful beach sand, fresh water, and evergreen trees.
