Gullwings and Veyrons Are on the Menu at Miami’s Newest Hotspot

Not all the masterpieces at Art Basel Miami Beach were to be found on the walls. The four-day extravaganza also saw the soft opening of Miami Supercar Rooms, a sort of dinner theater set to open in February, where the entertainment comes in the form of gorgeous vehicles like the iconic Mercedes-Benz 300 SL ‘Gullwing’ and Bugatti Veyron Grand Sport Vitesse.

Billed as the world’s first auto art gallery and epicurean experience—with a touch of nightlife thrown in—Miami Supercar Rooms is the brainchild of Elo, the British born fashion model-turned auto designer who opened the London Motor Museum in 2004. That’s where you’ll find his personal car collection, which includes both the 1966 and 1989 Batmobiles.

The 60,000-square-foot space in Miami’s hip Wynwood district will be centered around a spacious open-air patio with six aluminum pods, each housing an automotive work of art as the centerpiece to a “private supercar dining experience. Rather than standing around staring at the jaw-dropping machinery as with most car museums, here you’ll be able to drool over them at your leisure while consuming seared sea creatures and sipping champagne.

During Art Basel, a small group got to preview the site, where Elo invited car collectors to display some of their treasures on the surrounding blocks in what might become a mini-concours for the South Beach set, dubbed Promenade Auto Wynwood.

Cars on display included a jewel-encrusted Dodge Viper GTS, a McLaren 650S, a custom-designed 1952 Chevrolet known as “The Frankenstein”, and a rare Lamborghini tractor. Elo’s own silver Mercedes-Benz 300 SL presided majestically over the main entrance to the future venue, where even more lustworthy vehicles lurked inside. Lobster and bubbly was served to a few lucky visitors who arrived at lunchtime, and at the end of the day awards were presented to winners in various categories including classics, supercars, and art cars.

It remains to be seen if the concept will capture the attention of Miami’s jaded party-goers. But we’ve heard of worse ideas than dinner and a Gullwing.
