THE CAR

Born into a car crazy family, classic cars have always been a part of my DNA. As a younger enthusiast, my passion is not the most easily relatable among friends. Even now that I have the privilege of professionally indulging in this rather niche hobby, I still find one characteristic very hard to find in fellow enthusiasts: youth. Although I have found most of the old guard to be truly young at heart, the reality is the number of vintage car enthusiasts in my generation is limited. Ultimately, this motivates my mission at Petrolicious as I have seen a growing number of younger people catch the “bug” once they are properly introduced to what our scene has to offer.

Recently, I had the pleasure of meeting a fellow young enthusiast who has taken his automotive passion to the next level. Benjamin Tarlow, the 24-year-old owner of Mid-Century Motoring in New York, specializes in sourcing classic cars from Europe and importing them to the US market. His curated approach was inspired by a brief stint at an auction house, where he worked alongside a variety of specialists in the art and collectibles world. Dealing mainly in Hermes Birkin handbags, it soon became apparent that his career needed to take an automotive turn.

Unlike myself, Benjamin’s education in vintage motoring was self taught, spanning a wide variety of European makes and models. A fascination with BMW’s Neue Klasse led him to the similarly-proportioned Alfa Romeo Giulia coupes and sedans, cars that have since defined his automotive tastes. Spending a considerable amount of time overseas, Benjamin focuses on models that were never officially sold in the North American market, selecting each car in conjunction with a network of marque specialists.

We are excited to present one of Mid-Century Motoring’s top examples, a 1968 Alfa Romeo Giulia GT Junior which was recently imported from the Netherlands. This particular model year retained the iconic stepnose front end after it had been discontinued on the GTV, and also represents the last of the early flat dashboards. Many Juniors have been modified into GTA clones over time, making fully-restored, original spec cars a rare prospect.

OUR THOUGHTS

If you are in the market for a solid driver, this is definitely a great option. It’s euro heritage and rare color make it uniquely desirable. To us, the standout characteristic of this car is the restoration to original GT Junior spec rather than a GTA clone.
