This Piston Keychain Is A Tiny Homage To Ferrari’s F1 Legacy

We’ll admit to sometimes being a bit too enamoured with tiny mechanical objects. Be it miniature toys, a small machined part, or complex mechanisms that have been shrunk down to form a watch complication—if it fits in our hands or pockets we’re smitten.

So here’s a keychain we’ve been geeking out over, for two reasons. First, for how much work goes into it—Discommon says it needs “laser welding, lost wax casting, oxidizing, engraving, grinding, buffing, forging, and polishing”. Second, for how much it is—$450 will buy a lot of lesser keyrings.

This one’s silver, though, and the process behind making it is astounding. A wrecked piston that’d sat on the workbench at Discommon became the inspiration for a keychain—an exacting, 1-inch long replica of the same piston as you’d find in a Ferrari Formula 1 car.
