Tatra T87: Things of the Past

Other drivers speed past this Czech oddity without a second glance, seemingly oblivious to the car’s dorsal fin and triple headlights. But as Paul swings the Tatra into a parking space in front of a favorite local bistro, it’s as if he has brought the black teardrop to a stop in the middle of a Hollywood spotlight. Here come the second glances, the puzzled questions. "What in the world is that?"

We’ve been asking–actually, begging and pleading–for a ride in this monument to Americana but James Chen always found a way to politely turn us down. He is, he says, willing to share his Ferraris and Lamborghinis and Cadillacs, but he and his family enjoy such a personal relationship with this particular car that he seldom shares it with outsiders. He finally gave in.
Saab Sonett: Two-Stroke Heirloom
Play
In 1967, Glenn's parents special-ordered a silver Saab Sonett II from a Florida dealer and, as a result, Glenn spent his childhood riding to school not in Detroit’s muscle cars of the 1960s and ‘70s but in a 1500-pound Swedish sports car with a 70 horsepower, two-stroke engine. The Sonett has followed Glenn through life. In 1980, when he was eighteen years old, Glenn bought the car from his parents for $300 and, with the help of his father, gave the car enough energy to carry Glenn through college and into adulthood.
This Datsun Traveled 37,000 miles on a North American Road Trip
Play
The average American driver puts 13,500 miles per year on their car. Mr. Scott Fisher of Las Vegas, Nevada, added that many to the odometer of his 1967 Datsun Roadster in just the first three months of a recently-completed road trip that ultimately took him to forty-eight U.S. states and seven Canadian provinces. By the time Scott pulled into his garage in Las Vegas for the first time in eight months, he had covered 37,850 miles of the North American countryside.

Kevin, I agree completely….the cars, the Videos…all are truly wonderful and interesting in their own way but for me…after viewing these wonderful videos and stories….it has to be the people behind them…how does this Mr. Greenstein know what he does, where and how did he come upon the skills. I am building my new workshop and have been working on my old 914 for more than a few years but for sure I will never have the skills these people have and that is okay. My first post but have been viewing these great short stories for quite a while….great fun. The tongue and cheek posts following are fun too!

Just wanted to point out that the first car to which the “tear drop” shape was applied and pattented was built by romanian engineer Aurel Persu in 1922.

Guys like Mr. Greenstein are the true vintage. Forget the wonderful old cars, jukeboxes, motorcycle, and old Czech army uniforms, those are great. But Mr. Greenstein is the one I like to see, to hear, and to know how he can be so good at so many things; how did he get so clever with his hands, how does his brain retain all this mechanical knowledge, how does he speak so eloquently, and finally, how did he learn to pronounce Czech words?

Sorry, but I have to say it. The 1st car to ever be designed in a wind tunnel was the Lancia Aprilia. I’M SORRY! I JUST TOO MUCH LANCIA! :p

Jake you forgot the Tatra T77 which preceded T87 and the Lancia Aprillia by a few years. In any case it is splitting hairs over it. But have a Budvar and enjoy your beautiful Lancia – Na zdraví!

Didn’t this car contributed more to the demise of German Nazis by killing officers on regular basis? Love the car, as usual, a great video, too!

Tatra. Love ehm! Both trucks and cars. They still seem to lack the respect/recognition they deserve in my opinion. They really where ahead of their time and have made some staggering technical marvelous machines. Their air cooled engines where fantastic. They had V10 and V12 air cooled diesel truck engines that stoot their test of time up into this millenium. Independend suspension on trucks, pioneered on their cars well before anyone thought of such an idea.

Its videos like this that i come to Petrolicious everyday and i think we can all agree the car hobby could use a bit more people like this in it. I am also into the more unusual and oddball like cars the world has to offer and I think the Tatra fits the bill quite nicely. Its really a shame when you ask people about innovative car makers they usually give you Ferrari, Lotus, and maybe even GM in some cases which is fine but its really sad that Tatra is always out of the picture.
