27 Vintage Volvo Ads To Brighten Your Day

Volvo brochure scans by Pete Woychick

Until the late-’80s in the U.S., Volvo was a force to be reckoned with, selling more cars than BMW and Mercedes-Benz. Of course, it was on the strengths of its engineered-in safety, good fuel economy, simple–ahem–boxy styling, and a reputation for being indestructible. Older Volvos are fun to drive, too, especially on loose surfaces.

But what if so many people bought Volvos because the ads were so good? The cars are great, but the ads, the ads are what elevated Volvo from a quirky Swedish “thing” to a company that bragged its fast and practical 760 Turbo Wagon was basically the same “vehicle” as driving a Lamborghini Countach while towing a trailer.

There are so many great Volvo ads that we couldn’t pick just 10. What’s your favorite?

I have two of theses ads, the “774,000 mile” ad and the “souped up Ferrari” ad. Managed to find original copies when I had my ’72 1800 E
