Next month’s New York Icons sale, the final RM Sotheby’s auction of the year, will include a 1952 Jaguar C-type formerly driven in competition by Phil Hill.
Chassis number XKC 007 is believed to have been the first C-type to cross over to the US. It was delivered new to Charles Hornburg’s West Coast distributorship, where it was retained for competition and promotional purposes.
Most notably, it was raced by 1961 Formula 1 world champion Phil Hill. The car made its debut at Elkhart Lake in September 1952, with Hill driving the car from California to Wisconsin and back for the race. He finished fourth in the main event. And won the Sheldon Cup outright – securing the first win by a C-type on American soil. The car has since been restored and featured in the Mille Miglia and Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance. It is expected to command a (5.5 million to )7 million sum.
Also starring in the auction is a 1959 Ferrari 250 GT LWB California Spider Competizione, the second of only eight aluminium examples built. With a fifth overall and third in class at Le Mans to its name. The Ferrari could sell for between (14 million and )17 million.
A multiple award-winning 1965 Aston Martin DB5 Convertible in rare factory left-hand-drive configuration is set for a (2.5 million fee. And, as the most desirable version of the final air-cooled Porsche 911, a Japanese-bought, sub-12,000km 993 GT2 could sell for as much as )1.1 million to $1.4 million.
The auction’s celebrity ties come in the form of a BMW Z8 roadster, formerly owned by Apple co-founder Steve Jobs. The James Bond co-star in The World is Not Enough was in Jobs’ ownership from new in 2000 to 2003, and should break $300,000. A delivery-mileage Ferrari LaFerrari, Porsche 918, Pagani Huayra and 2018 Bugatti Chiron. The first one ordered into the US – all represent a healthy modern hypercar selection.
RM Sotheby’s car specialist Donnie Gould said: ‘Both the Competition California Spider and the C-type represent two of the most important vintage race cars found in the United States today, and are offered from an exceptional collection.
‘Apart from the original three Jaguar Works cars. The C-type on offer is easily the best and most desirable of the customer cars. While the 250 GT LWB is one of the most successful and significant competition California Spiders. The two are perfectly at home in our New York sale as true icons from the golden era of sports car racing.’
The 31-car New York auction will take place on December 6.
