Remembering Your Very First “Car”

Some of us have been lucky enough to own our very own car before earning our driver’s licenses—with our feet taking the place of an engine. We’re not sure if bombing around the back yard and driveway on our very own race car better-prepared us for the years of driving ahead, or if we were sometimes a bit too reckless with the gap given to our siblings’ ankles…

Today, pedal cars are still made and there are collectors who specialize only in these toys. This post was inspired by the latest from Pininfarina, an incredibly advanced device for well-heeled children.

Called the Fuoriserie Micro-Bolide, it’s a pedal-driven carbon fibre car with hand-sewn upholstery, hand-applied paint, and enough aluminum and carbon fibre to make the Red Bull F1 team blush. Price? An estimated 21,000 euros, depending on equipment.

If you’re in the market for a pedal car, before buying a new version, let this selection of vintage pedal cars inspire the first car for your child.

My first car, a Super Tot Rod, with “Chain Speed Drive”. I’m still driving a red RWD sports car. Don’t you love my hand placement? I LOVED that car!

My first car, shared with my brother, bought by my repressed gear-head father who never bought that MG he always promised himself but did light the fire in his sons. I’m at the wheel of this 4 HP monster on a cold Christmas morning in the dark-paneled, polyester 1970’s. We had a lot of fun in that kart until it went through its third centrifugal clutch, and my dad refused to buy another one. When you pulled the cord to start the engine the clutch would engage and send the Go Kart, driver-less, into the garbage cans. So one of… Read more »

I still have my Giordani Indianapolis from 1957. I haven’t been able to fit in it since about 1960 darn it! It understeered, I lived on enough of a hill to explore its limit on a paved right hand 90 into our driveway. Left front tire is worn the worst as proof…Photo has some evidence of other miss-deeds as well….

I’m a yonger dude, once I was born pedal cars were expensive and hard to find. I got a Power Wheels instead. I got it back when i was around 4 or so, maybe younger and used it until I didn’t fit in it anymore at like 8, maybe 10 years old. I don’t have a pic of me in it, but here’s what it looks like.
