 Fifty years ago today, Ford introduced the 1965 Mustang to the world. Available in hardtop and convertible body styles, the Mustang came from rather pedestrian origins but captured the imagination of housewives and enthusiasts alike. Though introduced as a 1965 model, Mustang fans consider the earlier vehicles 1964-1/2 models because certain equipment makes them unique from those built during the “proper” 1965 model year, which also added a fastback and GT package to the roster.

This Rangoon Red 1964-1/2 Mustang convertible is a very early version, built on March 24, 1964, and sold 50 years ago today at White Motor Company in Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina; it is the 3372nd Mustang built at Dearborn. The current owner purchased the car from a National Guardsman in the fall of 1992, and one year later embarked on a three-year, ground-up restoration. There are likely very few early Mustang convertibles equipped like this one: air conditioning, D-code 289 four-barrel with four-speed manual, Rally-Pac gauges, power top, spinner wheel covers, and black standard interior. Seller claims it has won Gold 16 times at Mustang Club of America national shows. If you’re anywhere near Charlotte, you can view it in person at the Mustang 50th Anniversary Celebration through April 20th. You will have to pony up $55,000 to make this one yours.
