1964 Alfa Romeo Giulia TZ1: The Project
I pitted with Tom on his inaugural race in Monterey at the Rolex MSR in his mom’s Giulia Spider. Great to see the TZ he told me stories of and to know more about its life with his mom. Conrad is a master with Alfa’s and an avid racer, enthusiast and artisan. Couldnt of gone to a better place to be reborn. Great video
You know why TZ has the speedometer on the passenger side? Just to scare them off.
About 20 years ago, I was driving pretty briskly through the winding back road near the shore down the south of Boston. Super early Sunday morning, no cars about, just me blasting through, when I saw a very flat, red car came approaching in the mirror, very quickly, so I stepped on it, of course. But a couple of corners later, the car just blast passed me, and that was one and only encounter with Alfa Romeo TZ2 on the public road ever.
drdugklein, TZs were twin spark (although I heard that the earliest ones were not, but I’m not a Zagato historian, so I can’t tell you for sure).
Valor007 and Robert – Dr. Eichenbaum and Conrad can probably shed more light on the details, but after the crash discussed in the film, the original Zagato aluminum tail was quickly replaced with fiberglass over chicken wire so the car could be ready for the next race. I believe Dr. Eichenbaum and Conrad obtained a replacement aluminum tail section from Europe for the restoration.
Great story and video, and what a great livery for an Alfa! Conrad is a pretty amazing guy. The last time I saw him was from a restaurant in Carmel during car week a couple of years ago, and he was on the street working hard to coax a Giulietta or Giulia Spider to start! Also love to watch him race his classic 39 Alfa 6C2500 CS at the Rolex. And kudos to David for his dedication to restore and maintain this car and it’s history. Forza Alfa!
