The 8C 2900 was always destined for greatness, having the fearsome Italian Mille Miglia sports car race as its main target, with a smattering of other sports car races to aim at en route. It sported the 2.9 litre version of Alfa’s established 8C engine, aided and abetted by two superchargers and double updraught Weber carburettors. Bodywork for the model was largely provided by period coachwork maestro, Carrozzeria Touring, who crafted the ‘2.9’s’ stunning teardrop-shaped mudguards to the tapered rear
Over the course of five years of production, five examples, all made in 1938, stood out alone, from the 40 or so ‘2.9’s’ made. This model is of one this five, built especially for the Mille Miglia. Chassis 412030 finished second in the precarious race, driven by Carlo Pintacuda. Its engine had been tuned to deliver some 225 brake horsepower along with that of two other Alfas. Pintacuda was on course to win the fabled race, leading from the Italian town of Piacenza to Terni, but unfortunately locked his brakes and lost position to Biondetti. The Alfa Romeo 8C 2900 Mille Miglia remains one of the most sought after pre-war cars of all time
Every Amalgam 1:8 scale model is supplied in a luxury black presentation box and mounted on a carbon fibre or leather base protected by a clear acrylic dust cover. The model title, original branding and edition number are displayed on polished stainless steel plaques mounted at the front end of the base.
