Son Takes Chrysler New Yorker Rally Car To The Next Stage

After some searching for a rally car, Jake Auerbach and his father settled upon a 1951 Chrysler New Yorker, a car which had previously run the famed La Carrera Panamericana race in Mexico and the Pike's Peak Hill Climb in Colorado. They began adding their own miles to the car's odomoeter, running the New York-to-Vancouver leg of the Trans-America Challenge in 2012 in addition to numerous other events. This father-and-son team covered more than 10,000 competition miles together.. They never, however, managed to win any of the events they entered together. In 2012, Jonathan Auerbach died at the age of 70. Shortly after, Jake entered the first rally he'd ever run without his dad. He won.

As a kid growing up near Detroit, Mr. Hans Abrahams was surrounded by American muscle cars. His father, however, hailed from Britain and introduced young Hans to the world of 1960s European Rally Championships. Hans’s cars now include a Canadian-built 1967 Volvo 123 GT, a 1966 Sunbeam Tiger Mark I-A, and a 1965 MG B, and when he cranks the ignition on these cars, you’ll abandon just about every notion you have about staid Volvo family-haulers and dowdy British sports cars.

Purist Loves This Car Just The Way It Is

We’ve been asking–actually, begging and pleading–for a ride in this monument to Americana but James Chen always found a way to politely turn us down. He is, he says, willing to share his Ferraris and Lamborghinis and Cadillacs, but he and his family enjoy such a personal relationship with this particular car that he seldom shares it with outsiders. He finally gave in.

Really glad see you continuing your dad’s plan. I always admired Jonanthan, what a stand up guy he was. Each day on our rally across America in 2011, I looked forward to hearing the Chrysler past me. Great car!!! Wife and I looking at 2017 Himilayan trip and/or 2019 Peking to Paris. Our Best to you.

Stories like this are why I love Petrolicious. I was very touched by the genuine emotion shown by this Man, and as many have said before me, its the people that make being into cars (and bikes) so wonderful. I am a subscriber on YouTube but this story lead me to the actual site and sign up.

Good luck with the Peking to Paris, Jake.

It’s always the souls behind the cars that make these stories shine. Not gonna lie, this one got me chopping some onions just now and thanks for sharing Jake. I sincerely wish you and the New Yorker the best at Peking to Paris Motor Challenge! I’m sure your pops will be with you in spirit, so Godspeed to you!

As always, thank you Petrolicious!

This is what non car people will never understand. Yes, they are works of mechanical art (well, some) but they are more than that. The emotion on his face as he recounts the work and experiences had between he and his father show a car as being so much more.

These are the kind of videos that keep me coming back to Petrolicious. The story of this man and his father is both uplifting and heartbreaking all at the same time. Thanks for sharing this incredible story with us, and reminding us why we love cars and why we love driving them.
