684hp Novitec Ferrari Portofino Proves That “Entry-Level” Can Still Be Fun

The term “entry-level” really does need to be taken in context sometimes, like in the case of the Portofino, a 591hp convertible that marks the entry-point into the world of the modern Ferrari. Replacing the California T a year ago it brought with it more power and performance as well as more resolved styling. Its twin-turbo V8 has been tuned to respond like a naturally-aspirated engine, albeit one of a much larger capacity than its 3.9-liters, and its 3.5-second 0-62mph places it amongst the very quickest cars on the road today.

Tuner Novitec was having none of it, though. All it saw was “entry-level Ferrari” and decided to give the Portofino a workover. To help liberate some more power from that twin-turbo motor, Novitec now offer three different options for the Portofino, starting with basic engine management tweaks to a power-optimized exhaust system with a catalyst replacement pipe and removal of the active exhaust flaps. Tick all the boxes and up to 684hp and 642 lb-ft of torque can be had. Novitec claims a 0.3-second reduction in the 0-62mph sprint and a top speed of 202mph.

Performance is another term that requires a bit more context these days, and these figures not only eclipse cars like the iconic F40 but make the Novitec Portofino also almost as quick as the far more focused mid-engined 488 Spider. Novitec hasn’t forgotten about the visual aspect either, you can have a new front splitter, rear spoiler and side panels all in carbon fiber and there are a range of lightweight 21 and 22-inch forged alloy wheels to choose from too. The optional lowered sports suspension set-up allows for hydraulic adjustment of the front axle of up to 1.5-inches, perfect to keep that expensive new carbon splitter intact. Whether these modifications rob the Portofino of some of its more laidback grand tourer personality will be up to each owner to decide. One thing is for sure though, if you want to go faster in a Ferrari that has space for four you will have to step up to a far more expensive ‘mid-range’ model like the GTC4 Lusso.
