It’s one thing to have been one of the three Top Gear presenters, and have just about any car in the world available to you after a phone call or two, but there are few presenters in the world to have driven as much exotic machinery as Alain de Cadenet.

Thanks to his informative series like Victory By Design, his driving talents, and his astute knowledge of cars, de Cadenet has driven everything from Auto Union Type-Ds to Ferrari 375s. Here are nine clips to prove he may just be the luckiest man alive.

Ferrari 375

Jaguar XJ220

Maserati 450S

“Silk Cut” Jaguar XJR-9

Jaguar XJ13

Lotus 23

Chevrolet Corvette Stingray L88

And if you’re a bit envious of him, here’s a bonus clip of Alain de Cadenet getting buzzed by a Spitfire…

Alain and his Victory by Design series was something I wouldn’t miss for the world when it came on. Was glued to the TV hanging on every word Alain spoke and every framerate of video shown. Not even the original Top Gear with Tiff Needell (also one of my favorite people ever) could match what Alain did for me with his James Bond like (Sean Connery James Bond not Daniel Craig) suave sophisticated presentation style swept me up into a world where I put myself in, experiencing every moment of excitement and dreamlike state of actually driving such rare and mythical machinery. If there was a GoFund me for a new series of Victory by Design I would be the first to contribute. Maybe I should start one? 🙂 Can I count on you guys to be the first contributors?

For me ,” Victory By Design” , was like the “National Public Radio” series of many years ago featuring Carl Hass ,
“Adventures in Great Music” .
Something to be appreciated and enjoyed by a few , but understanding that most people don’t get it .
Every year I watch the Goodwood Revival and wait for Alain to appear .
His distinctive voice and reporting are always one of my favorites.

For me personally, my favorite videoof Alain was him driving the Ferrari 333SP. I don’t remember how I stumbled upon the show, but I was raised a car guy by a dad with race cars, muscle cars, and hot rods my entire childhood. Italian sports cars were never something that interested me. Until that fateful day. The car was odd looking, and clearly a factory race car, but when he first fired it up, and I heard the sound, I was hooked immediately. The sound of that V12 was insane and feral to young me, after having grown up listening to nothing but low, grumbly, American V8s. As the years have ticked by I still love the 333SP for sparking my exotic interest, but now tend to lean more towards the classic Ferrari’s with beautiful curves and chrome in all the right places. I was fortunate to go for a ride in a Ferrari F355 Spyder with a Tubi titanium exhaust last year. Summer weather, top down, the sounds of the valves opening and closing behind you was amazing, and one of my new favorite automotive memories, specifically of the auditory variety.

I agree. The startup sound of the 333sp in that video was the best. I loved that sound so much that I used it at my wedding reception on introduce the bridal party.
