1971 Porsche 911E
Owner: Chris Rockey
Make: Porsche
Model: 911E
Year: 1971
Location: Indiana
Chris Rockey lives in Indiana near Chrysler and General Motors manufacturing plants, so his car stands out among the crowd in a town that mostly consists of Detroit Iron. Still, he gets thumbs up from other drivers and lots of questions about the car whenever he stops for gasoline. He says it runs great and drives it two or three times a week during the summer and he’d drive it daily if Midwest rain and snow didn’t prohibit it.
Chris bought the car a few years ago needing minor work. Leaving the paint and suspension work to professionals, Chris himself restored the interior, including those fab plaid tartan seat inserts. The paint was changed from a rather loud orange and grey with Martini stripes to the more subtle light ivory. The 2.2-liter powertrain is stock save for the fuel system; Weber carbs replaced fuel injection, which Chris thinks is easier to tune.
One of his favorite things to do with the car is take his 2-year-old daughter Nadia for rides. She has a car seat that fits in the small cockpit, which Chris secures to the roll bar. In the rare instance that they see another 911 on the road, she always recognizes the other car and yells, “Porsche!”
