Color Inspiration: Brown

Design and color have a large part to play in the history of the automotive world. Here, we’ve married the two things together for the purpose of showcasing some automotive beauty.

Partly due to 1970’s associations and it’s camouflaging nature, brown was a car color recently thought to be going extinct, but it seems that the moment it was predicted to die out was the moment that people began to value it again. According to paint giant PPG’s Global Color Manager, Jane Harrington, brown’s recent popularity is due to it’s resonance with stability, comfort, and authenticity.

“Think of the experience of good coffee, good chocolate, great pieces of wood,” Harrington told us, referencing the entire field of upscale umbric goods. “You’re seeing it across the crafts industry: more genuine materials, something that has longevity. The handmade quality people are looking for in luxury.” (Source)

Now there are entire sites dedicated to brown cars, like The Brown Car Blog and the Brown Car Appreciation Society on Facebook. Hopefully brown is here to stay!

Is there a particular brown car you have a fondness for?

Hardly any colour better then brown, it even hides a bit the rusty spots 😉
But then aiagin you cant always choose the colour of an older car that has it all for you. But to make things even better mine has a full brown interior also, topped by brown faux teak wood on the sides and rear door, and highest spoiler ever 😉
Where can you find this all in one car?

I have a very strong desire to build a pre ’67 Beetle in brown and cream very similar to the car in the composite.

Steve McQueen’s brown Lusso and Mini Cooper were very bold colour choices and both rather fabulous.
