Story and Photography by Tom Horna
I grew up in Poland, and I was interested in cars since I was a little boy. All of my friends were also “petrolheads”. Cars, motorsport events, and racing: that’s what we were about.
Poland was a communist country when I was growing up, and cars like BMW were a dream not just to own—but also to see one on the road. The difficulty of getting a premium car ended in 1989, when Poland became a democratic country and everyone started importing cars. Except me: as a teenager, I couldn’t afford a BMW, let alone BMW 635. In fact, I didn’t know anyone who could.
I found my way into BMWs after moving to UK in 2004. I got myself a job in BMW as a salesperson, and I loved it. But after a while, I got into classics, and the rest his history. I bought a 1602L some years ago, and wasn’t really looking to buy a 6 Series, until I found out that one of my newly-met friends had one. That was it: I saw it, asked if he wanted to sell it…now, I’m the proud owner of a lovely BMW 635 CSI Highline.
The 6 Series was my childhood favourite BMW. I used to watch a TV series, with the six being the main character’s car. I was blown away by its beauty, and wanted to have one since then. Now, it is my dream come true, and my go-to car for weekend drives.

I had an E30 325is that was perfect but I sold it years ago for another project. I’ve always missed the beautiful 6 cylinder sound and the wonderful way 70’s and 80’s BMWs drove.
I purchased a 1987 M6 this fall and it’s brought back all the wonderful memories, just in the short drive home. It needs a but of service and, me being in Canada, I’ve got the long winter to sort the car out completely before spring.
Your car looks great and I hope to be as proud of mine as you are of yours.
Your 6 looks sweet. I am the last original owner of an 88 M6 in Canada 131 were shipped between 87&88 There’s no confirmation, but supposedly 2 were shipped and titled as 89s. Almost 28 years and 160K kms i still get a rush driving the car. Your wheels look great but I’ve left my car stock. Enjoy your car, take it for a long drive late at night on the autobahn(I shipped mine to Europe for 7 wks). The sweet spot was 205km/hr unbelievable, truly an autobahn cruiser!
The shape is classic and only gets better with age
I was actually going to say the opposite – I love the dimensions of the wheels on this Highline.
As an E24 owner I really liked this story! When I first saw one I knew that I had to have it. My friend owned one, and I constantly told him that I would gladly be the next caretaker for it. Eventually I purchased my 1987 635csi from him and have put over 12,000 fantastic miles on it.
Great story and photos!!
