These 48 Pictures Capture Vintage Speed At The Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion

Photography by Alan Macey

One of the things mentioned in our guide to Monterey photography was that it’s possible to get great shots of the action at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca from just about anywhere. This year’s events have been fantastic to behold, something that our friend Alan Macey captured well at the circuit during the historic races.

Macey moved around the track, taking in the pits, different classes, turns, and approaches—panning, details, closely-fought action—to develop an overall picture of the event that you’re seldom able to share in unless you were actually there. What’s always interesting about motorsports events stacked with great cars, at least as I see it, is how each photographer is able to focus on wildly different approaches at the same place and time.

Which of Macey’s shots do you feel captured the spirit of the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion?

You can view more of Alan Macey’s work at Instagram, Curb, or view products from Curb in our store.

Fantastic work! BTW all these would make great desktop wallpapers if they were larger. Keep up the good work and thanks for sharing!

Amazing and inspiring work, Alan Macey. Appreciate you taking a chance with that “aggressive depth of field”. Gorgeous!

Great, great shots!
Almost overwhelming number of incredible cars. Probably good that I wasn’t there. I might have just devolved into a drooling idiot.

My favorite two weeks of the year. Great photos!!! I spotted our Porsche 908-2 in two of the shots. Working on editing the video of us battling the 917K.

Was there for the first time. I was talking to a guy the night before in a Pacific Grove bar about my having gone many times over 30+ years to the Mitty at Road Atlanta. He said, “well, yeah, this is the Super Bowl”.

He was right!

What is that car (in photo #7, behind the CSL)? A white and red sedan.

Forgot to answer the question:

While the photo of Canepa’s 917 turning in is really an excellent, excellent shot, my favourite is the Ferrari, Porsche, Corvette number. Well timed and composed. That’s the one.

Thanks! Love the trifecta shot too, if only the Ferrari was slightly more in focus :(. I was shooting with pretty aggressive depth of field all weekend, and got caught out quite a bit.

Too bad the Eagle didn’t get to fly in the race. Next time!

Amazing set of pictures – The cars are just amazing! I have to be there next year. Thank you for sharing.
BTW: What is your go to zoom?

I don’t use a lot of zoom lenses, but I do really like the canon 70-200 f/2.8L with IS. Most of these telephoto shots were shot with a 300mm f/2.8L.
