A 950-mile trip can be dicey in a vehicle that’s twenty years old. Logic holds that it should be even more confidence-shaking in a car from 1957. However, that way of thinking fails to take into account vintage automobiles in the same impressive shape as this Mercedes-Benz 220S Cabriolet.

According to its owner, the Benz “had a new brown cabriolet top in 1984, an engine rebuild in 1985 at 110,862 miles, and new interior wood trim and repaint in 1986. In 2013 [it] had an extensive frame on restoration, including [a] down-to-bare-metal concours-quality repaint (ivory, MB 608), and mechanical refreshening.” The most recent rejuvenation was performed by Eurocraft Classics in Manchester, Georgia. Pictures of the process are available.

This drop-top, one of 2,178 Mercedes 220S Cabriolets built between 1956 and 1959, was driven from Atlanta to Amelia Island in Florida for its famous Concours and a “Cars and Coffee” gathering earlier this year. The Mercedes-Benz Club of America declared this 130,050-mile specimen as having the “Best Exterior Paint.” That was bound to make such a lengthy drive completely worthwhile.
