The debate over who the greatest Formula 1 driver in history will by its very nature never be resolved, but when it comes to a selection of the top drivers to have ever graced the sport, then Michael Schumacher and Ayrton Senna are always at the very top of any shortlist.
Their achievements and on-track exploits have long become the stuff of motorsport legend and any memorabilia from their careers tends to attract a lot of attention. So much so that finding decent collectible items is an increasingly difficult endeavor. Fortunately, RM Sotheby’s will be hosting an online-only auction from 22 November to 2 December in Detroit, Michigan of a fantastic collection of F1 memorabilia, both from these two stars as well as some big names predominantly from the late ’80s through to the early 2000s.
The Memorabilia on offer spans everything from signed helmets, racing gloves, large-scale handmade models and race suits to Formula 1 wings, nose cones and even complete racing engines.
Some of the more notable lots include Ayrton Senna’s signed helmet from 1988 when he won his first world championship in a McLaren Honda (estimated at between $50,000 to $70,000) to Michael Schumacher’s 1996 Ferrari racing suit ($10,000 to $12,000). There are numerous high-quality scale models on offer too, Senna’s 1985 Lotus 97T and Hakkinen’s 1999 McLaren Mercedes MP4/14 stand out in particular. Most are priced between $4000 and $6000.
Rear wings, body covers and nose cones from manufacturers like McLaren Mercedes, Arrows, Jordan Peugeot, Ferrari and Lotus Honda will all be available too; just the thing to mount on the back wall of the TV room. Values range from $1,000 for a set of Mika Häkkinen’s 2001 rear wing endplates to a rather more serious $20,000 for a set of wings off the 1979 Ferrari 312 T4 driven by Gilles Villeneuve and Jody Scheckter.
