Experiencing California from the driver’s seat of a ’65 Ford Mustang

Another younger reader reached out to us with some photos and story on his beautiful ’65 Ford Mustang “hardtop” Coupé. Built in February, 1965, it’s now owned by Menlo College student Thomas Brest, who uses it to explore the many sights that California has to offer.

“I love the feeling I get when behind the wheel, it’s a true modern time capsule and gives me the feeling of growing up in the ’60s,” Brest writes. “Being born in the ’90s, I feel I was born behind my time.”

A life-long California car—even built in San Jose—Brest was able to recently buy it from his cousin when his relative enlisted in the Air Force, and has had to work multiple jobs in order to keep his Mustang passion alive. This car here is a largely original example, fitted with the 289 V8 engine and Cruise-O-Matic automatic transmission.

Since he’s taken ownership, Brest has added tasteful, period-correct modifications for added performance, including an Edelbrock intake, Holley 4 barrel carb, tri-y headers, Shelby GT350 side exhaust, and disc brake kit for spirited driving.

“I love to drive my car on California Route 160 going south from Sacramento down the delta towards Antioch,” he says. “While driving the levee, I feel the sensation of what old times where like. Small towns, simple living. Even the looks and conversations I get at stop lights with people twice my age. It makes me really appreciate my life and the first car I’ve ever owned—my ’65 Mustang.”
