Ford Debuts All-Electric Mustang Cobra Jet 1400 Drag Car

We’ve already seen Ford’s new all-electric Mustang Mach-E take the nameplate into a completely new direction (look, the comments section is waiting, we haven’t got time for all of that). But The Blue Oval has just revealed a new Mustang that takes the EV platform more than just a step further. A quarter mile further, in fact.

The one-off Mustang Cobra Jet 1400 is Ford’s first electric drag race car, and even die-hard, piston-loving purists can’t argue with its performance numbers: more than 1,400hp – hence the name – and 1,100lb ft (1,491Nm) of torque, all available instantly off the line. Ford says the Cobra Jet will make the quarter mile in the low eight-second range and hit 170mph, or around 274kph.

While the Cobra may not have the earth-shaking sound you’d expect from a drag racer, an electric drivetrain also means no more blown cylinders, engine rebuilds or dangerously flammable fuel to deal with.

“We saw the Cobra Jet 1400 project as an opportunity to start developing electric powertrains in a race car package that we already had a lot of experience with, so we had performance benchmarks we wanted to match and beat right now,” says Mark Rushbrook, Global Director, Ford Performance Motorsports. “This has been a fantastic project to work on, and we hope the first of many coming from our team at Ford Performance Motorsports.”

Ford is still testing the Cobra Jet and plans to make a live debut at a sanctioned drag race event later this year – hopefully, considering what we’re living through right now.

These supercars, if they go to countries like Vietnam, are like tigers in a zoo. It’s like professional gamers who started playing stickman fighter.
