From vintage racing to one of the best passes ever seen—anywhere—Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca plays host to a number of exceptional events every year. This week, it’s all about the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion, or “Monterey Historics” for short. If you’re planning on attending this weekend or want to understand a bit more about what makes this track so special, we’ve selected five clips to guide you ‘round.

How best to drive your vintage Porsche 911S around Laguna Seca? Well, The Racer Channel posted a video of Patrick Long hustling one such 911, and the near-15 minutes of visor cam footage is just about as close to the action as you’re able to get. You know what else is great about this clip? When Long is passed by the cars from the next class up…

What’s the Corkscrew all about, and why is it so special? Last year, /Drive made this great mini-doc on the turn, and spoke to a few drivers as well.

While competition won’t likely be quite this fierce at the Monterey Historics, we’ve taken the liberty of queuing up what has been called, simply, “The Pass”—and part of what makes The Corkscrew so special.

Good videos all.
I’ve got to add one of my favorites at Laguna Seca, similar to the 911 video, but on steroids. Bruce Canepa at the 2010 Monterey Motorsports Reunion in his 917K. The music of this car is worth the 11 minutes even if there were no video.

If we’re talking of Laguna Seca and not strictly sticking to the Historic meet then mention has to be given to the titanic battle between Casey Stoner and Valentino Rossi in the 2008 MotoGP race there.

Lets face it Mr Lange beyond the Historic ‘ races ‘ [ using that word rather loosely ] there’s been a plethora of intense competitions at Laguna Seca [ two wheel and four ] over the decades including some of the most mind numbing passes ever in the Corkscrew not to mention more a few death defying maneuvers on other corners : the entire track being one extended challenge to negotiate regardless of what you’re driving.riding . The fact is Laguna Seca is one of the most iconic tracks in the world . The sad fact is Laguna Seca has been losing its mojo over the years slowly being relegated to the history books rather than the present more due to the series that race there than any lack of the track itself . Sigh …… Motor Racing …… Now more scripted ‘ spectacle ‘ than anything resembling sport on a rapid decline it may never recover from due in no small part to the over emphasis on safety and entertainment to the exclusion of competition ,relevance and sport . Hemingway spinning in his grave at 10,000 rpm as we speak .
