Before the world-renowned Targa Florio gets underway, or the parade of classics lines up for the Mille Miglia, there’s another Italian classic car rally often left out of the limelight. In Palermo in late April, our photographer Rosario Liberti was at the Monte Pellegrino Historic—a small, competitive event that centres around a hill climb on a Saturday.

For participants, there are also local tours, classic car parades, and related events to enjoy—the original Monte Pellegrino started in 1908, so it’s another area of Italy with winding roads (and vintage cars) stitched through the mountainous landscape.

As you’ll see from Rosario’s selections, the fact the organizers call the event a “dynamic” concours d’elegance is not far from the truth. To prepare for next year, plan to be in Palermo, Italy, in mid-to-late April—and get used to flinging your classic through hairpin turns.
