John Ketchell Paints Semi-Abstract Racing Fury

Mr. John Ketchell describes his style as “semi abstract,” which allows him “more freedom to interpret the subject matter.” His backgrounds are typically painted with thick, parallel brush strokes that keep the eye moving and, in some cases, contrasted against perpendicular strokes used to create a focal point.

His subjects are painted with finer brushes and much tighter strokes (than the backgrounds) that allow the appearance of some necessary detail. But he particularly enjoys painting night and rainy race scenes because of the atmosphere that is created with the spray and reflections from lights.

John initially favored a more photo-real style, but found it a bit frustrating. He transitioned, feeling that a more impressionistic style would allow for greater expression.

Favorite automotive topics include cars of the 1930s and 60s, as well as the more famous sports prototypes such as the Ford GT40, Lola T70, and Porsche 917. When not painting, John appropriately enjoys spending time behind the wheel of his own GTD40. His work is on permanent display at the Historic Car Art Gallery in Ticknall, Derbyshire, UK.
