Mini has announced that the new John Cooper Works GP, the fastest and most powerful roadgoing model so far, will launch in 2020. Just 3000 units will be be built for sale worldwide, with the production model based on the Mini John Cooper Works GP Concept that was presented for the first time in September 2017 at Frankfurt Motor Show, following on from the previous two John Cooper Works GP production models. This one will produce more than 300hp from its four-cylinder turbo engine, and will feature large front and rear aprons, a distinctive roof spoiler and plenty of lightweight materials.

The new model is now in testing on the race track, trying out the suspension developed specifically for Works GP. The previous model, built in 2012 to a limited-run of 2000, achieved an 8:23 minute lap time on the Nürburgring-Nordschleife, so Mini will be aiming for a faster time for the new model.

I have tried to be enthused about these cars, but then I drive one and am reminded of the gigantic gulf between this and its progenitor. Perhaps were I younger and without the reference of Sir Alec’s original I would be able to accept these for what they are – a reasonably priced runabout with unique looks. I am open to having my mind changed, however, so when this is on the ground at PIR I will try to cadge a few laps and report back. More power is rarely a bad thing.
