Morgan Ditching Steel Chassis For Aluminum After 83 Years

One of the oldest continuing car brands in the world is finally entering the 21st century. Morgan Motor Company in the UK has announced it will be ditching its steel chassis – a variation of which has been in use since 1936 – and going to all aluminum for its range of cars in 2020.

Currently, the steel chassis underpins the 4/4, Plus 4 and V6 Roadster. While the company has dabbled with aluminum chassis in the past, Morgan’s first car with the new all-aluminum CX-Generation platform is the Plus Six, which debuted at the Geneva Motor Show earlier this year. That chassis will be used for the company’s entire lineup in the coming years, which will debut at next year’s Geneva show in March.

The only other details the company has shared about these models is that they will all feature options that include a manual gearbox and a smaller engine than the 3.0-litre turbo inline six cylinder used in the Plus Six now.

Of course, this march towards the future still has its limits for such a traditional company; there’s no mention of replacing its ash wood body frames.
