Relive Goodwood’s Glorious History Before This Weekend’s Revival

This weekend marks the return of the Goodwood Revival, the yearly celebration of all that is classic, speedy, and noteworthy. We’ll be on hand to cover the action, but before we do, it’s important to note why we’re so excited to be there this year: it’s a place where history is made.

From its beginnings as a hillclimb to its evolution to circuit racing, a gradual decline, and a measured resurrection, Goodwood has been about two things: the joy of driving and the joy of competition. Here are some moments from the past that have us excited to see what’s in store this year.

This clip is named, simply, “Hill Wins”. As of this writing, it has fewer than 300 views on YouTube. From Shelby Cobras spinning out to Graham Hill hauling ass in a classic Ferrari 330 P. It’s like your favorite car auction lineup whizzing past at more than 100 mph!

I’m not sure how to describe this film, which, judging by its YouTube description, was produced in period by the Vintage Sports Car-Club (VSCC). Year? 1963. It’s an awesome look at the way things used to be—it’s just a shame the soundtrack is so irritating.

British cars win at Goodwood—which is period newsreel footage of a 9-Hour car race held at the circuit in 1952—is literally edge-of-your-seat riveting.
