Sommet Des Légendes: A Lovely Canadian Vintage Race Event

Located about two hours away from Montreal, Circuit Mont-Tremblant is a track that was built in the mid-’60s and has seen a number of notable championships and drivers circulate around its 15 beautiful corners. Notable for hosting Formula 1, Trans-Am, and the Can-Am series in period, in recent years, a big refresh has left the far safer circuit an attractive place to hold a vintage racing event.

And Sommet des Légendes was exactly that.

Held in mid-July, this 11th running of the event featured Can-Am, IMSA, LMP, Formula Libre, and “classic monoposto” cars as some of the classes. Montreal-based photographer Charles Audet was on hand to capture the action and atmosphere from beautiful Quebec.

Enjoy the photos from this year’s event, and be sure to put the 2016 edition on your calendar: watching vintage race cars in a very relaxed setting is becoming more and more difficult to experience.

Now this looks like a nice group of cars.

I saw the Audi race several times back in the day. Even watched them swap out the whole rear end once during a race at Sears Point (before they outlawed the procedure). Brilliant, thoughtful design. I think I even have some photographs of it limping around after the shunt before coming into pit lane. Good times!

I was able to find some shots of the sister car from… holy cow… 2003! 😉

Side note: I was able to capture these photos at Laguna Seca because my girlfriend at the time took a road trip with me up the California coast to ultimately arrive at this ALMS event. She stayed by my side into the evening to watch the checkered flag fall, as I scurried about the track and paddock all day amidst the sights, sounds, and smells of road racing. Needless to say, I married her! 😉

I was there on Sunday. It’s great event to get real close to cars, pits are open, people are super cool.
The track is amazing but unfortunatly some great viewpoints (such as the hill at Namerrow corner) where not open to public.
Still there was some amazing cars, BMW CSL’s, Porsche 911 RSR, 1948 Talbot (star of the day, if you ask me), fine range of 60’s and 70’s open wheelers and protos and good driving too. As a bonus, at lunch time and after the last race, Mr Stroll took his Sunoco Ferrari 512 (featured in Petrolicious video) for some laps on the south loop.

Yikes ! Seriously ? Heck I lived all the way down NJ/NYC way back in the day and used to come up there for the CanAm races etc as often as possible while visiting family in Montreal . So yeah .. you’d best get yourself up there . Mont Tremblant being one of the genuinely iconic road racing courses in North America . Whoa . Just thinking about the place [ and Watkins Glen ] bringing a flood of memories from days gone by

Yup I knew of the track and it has some races from time to time, but sports channels here don’t give racing enough attention in my opinion! But yeah, Mont-Tremblant is a magnificient little city.

I just heard of this event from a friend from Germany! and I live in Montreal. Shame! We hear more about lousy farm expos than this!
