Ten Awesome Competition Cars From Los Angeles Legend Bruce Meyer
There’s a new exhibition opening at the Petersen Automotive Museum in Los Angeles, and this time it features ten groundbreaking race cars from the collection of Petersen Founding Chairman and legendary LA car guy Bruce Meyer. It’s called “Winning Numbers: The First, The Fastest, The Famous,” and it opens on Saturday, February 23, 2019. The display will include the “winningest Ferrari road racer of all time”, the 1957 Ferrari 625/250 Testa Rossa, which claimed first prize in more than half of the 50 competitions in which it was raced; the first production 1962 Shelby Cobra, CSX2001; the 1962 Greer Black Prudhomme, raced by drag racing legend Don Prudhomme who won 237 of his 241 races in the car; the renowned 1952 So-Cal Speed Shop Belly Tank Racer, built from a P-38 Lightning fighter belly tank from World War II; the 1979 Kremer Porsche 935 K3 that took first place overall at Le Mans; and the 1929 Ford “747” Bonneville Racer that Meyer ran 204 mph at Bonneville Salt Flats. The others cars in the exhibition are the famous 1934 Ford Pierson Brothers Coupe, 1960 Chevrolet Corvette C2, 1961 Ferrari 250GT SWB and 1965 Bizzarrini Iso Grifo A3C.
Winning Numbers will run until January 19, 2020. It’s the first of a three-part “California Collecting” exhibit series, which will focus on three prominent collections based on the West Coast. As for Meyer, he’s best known for his dedication to preserving hot rod history and historic motorsports, for his great enthusiasm for the collector car scene and his “never lift” catchphrase. He was a close friend and neighbor of Petersen Publishing founder Robert E Petersen when he and “Pete” had the idea for the Petersen Automotive Museum, which was opened to the public 25 years ago in 1994.
