The standard Aston Martin DB11 is an impressive grand tourer and its debut at the Geneva Motor Show in 2016 marked a turning point in the Gaydon company’s illustrious history. It was the first model to be launched following the Daimler AG collaboration and while the engine may have been sourced from Mercedes’ AMG division, it still delivered a driving experience that was pure Aston. Three years on and the DB range has now expanded to include ever more impressive variants. Some, like the DBS Superleggera, are fitted with Aston’s own twin-turbo 5.2-liter V12, and it is this range-topper that has now dropped its top for the coming summer.
The DBS Superleggera Volante may share some of its underpinnings with the DB11 but it has received all of the detail upgrades that make the hardtop DBS Superleggera such a special car. “DBS Superleggera produces a spectacular and relentless level of performance and so for the Volante, we focused on bringing that extra level of sensory overload that only an open-top Super GT can deliver inside the cabin,” Marek Reichman, executive vice president and CCO of Aston Martin, said. “With the unique dynamics, beautiful yet brutish design, and the unmistakable harmonics of Aston Martin’s 5.2-liter V12 engine, we believe we have delivered a unique and unforgettable driving experience that is synonymous with the traditions of the Volante name.”
That electrically foldable cloth roof has done little to dull the Superleggera’s pace. Equipped with the same 715hp, 663lb-ft twin-turbo V12, the Volante shoots to 62mph in 3.6 seconds—only 0.2 seconds behind the coupé—and achieves the same 211mph top speed. We would assume that would be with the roof firmly in place of course. Detail changes to the airflow around the car ensure that the Volante produces just 6.6lbs less downforce than the coupé too. A multitude of customizations will be available to customers when deliveries begin in the third-quarter of 2019. Pricing is estimated to start at £247,500 in the UK and $329,100 for the US including taxes.
