Bentley Motors has just announced details of its third-generation Flying Spur, a luxury Grand Tourer which it claims is the most advanced sports sedan on the road. “As with the launch of the Continental GT, the new Flying Spur is a ground-up development that pushes the boundaries of both technology and craftsmanship to deliver segment-defining levels of performance and refinement,” commented Adrian Hallmark, chairman and chief executive of Bentley Motors. In today’s market of highly accomplished four-door GT cars that is a bold statement, yet the Flying Spur’s combination of beautiful British design and uncompromising build quality already place it among the very best offerings in its class.
The Flying Spur is also packed with cutting-edge technologies like an aluminum composite chassis, 48V electronic architecture and electronic all-wheel steering and active all-wheel drive. Newly-designed three-chamber air springs allow for both superb handling and a sumptuous ride quality through the Dynamic Ride system, which should make this latest Bentley superbly enjoyable for both driver and passengers.
There are few sports sedans or indeed sports cars that can match it for raw accelerative ability too, providing 626hp of power and 664 lb-ft of torque through a dual-clutch eight-speed transmission, using a refined version of the familiar twin-turbo W12 6.0-liter motor. Despite a 5372-pound curb weight, the Flying Spur launches to 60mph in 3.7-seconds and tops out at 207mph. Sharing the world’s largest iron disc brakes with the Continental GT, it stops as effectively as it goes.
But while outright speed has always been important it is the sheer level of technology, luxury and customizability that really sets the Flying Spur apart from the rest. Aside from the LED matrix headlamps, optional 2200W 19-speaker Naim audio system and every active and passive driver assist system you can imagine, it is the choice of wood veneers, fabrics, interior and exterior colors and even tailored body modifications that will have customers the most excited. Bentley Mulliner personalization options extend to such unique offerings as a world-first, solid wood, three-dimensional diamond quilted door insert, exclusively available in open-pore walnut.
The new Flying Spur will be available to order from this Fall and customer deliveries will begin in early 2020.
