Tim Layzell’s Graphic Style Captures Sheer Speed

Many of the automotive artists that we feature have an impressionistic style that allows for the vibrations and movement of motor racing to shine through. But this week’s subject, Mr. Tim Layzell favors a much more graphic approach focused on conveying sheer speed.

Tim also paints in a photo-real style and has been recognized for both approaches. While hard work usually triumphs over natural ability, in Tim’s case, he seems to be both prolific and gifted as his earliest drawings (from age three!) display an innate ease in describing automotive proportions.

While his work covers a broad era (the ‘30s through the ‘70s) he prefers to focus on the 1950s and ‘60s because of the wonderful cars and characters. According to his site, “a particular favorite with Tim is the dynamic, swashbuckling Mike Hawthorn. Whether he is depicted four-wheel-drifting his Cooper Bristol, D-Type Jaguar or Ferrari Dino, Hawthorn is always a popular subject with Tim’s customers throughout the world. Other favorite subjects include drivers like Tazio Nuvolari, Fangio, Stirling Moss, Jim Clark and Graham Hill and cars like the Alfa Romeo 158, Maserati 250F, the Ferrari Testa Rossa and GTO and the Lotus Grand Prix Cars of the 1960s, the 18, 25, and 49 and the BRM cars of the same era.”

But we’re not the only ones who admire his work. Just last year, Tim’s work was featured at some of the best vintage car events around the world including the Goodwood Revival, Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, and Silverstone Classic. Enjoy!
