And Now We Have The World’s Largest LEGO VW Camper…

The LEGO phenomenon just keeps growing, as do the size of the creations. This one is thought to be the world’s largest LEGO VW camper van, a full-size Type 2 Bay Window replica built from 400,000 bricks. It weighs 700kg and measures over 5 metres in length, 1.9 metres in width and close to 2 metres in height; or 3 metres with the roof popped up. Yes, the roof can be raised or lowered, the sliding side door works too, though it rolls on actual VW wheels rather than LEGO versions…

It was built in just six weeks by Rene Hoffmeister, one of only 12 officially-certified LEGO modelmakers in the world (yes, really), and colleague Pascal Lenhard. The pair had produced a construction plan in advance using 3D imaging, and had calculated the rigidity of the side walls and windows needed to ensure lasting stability, and the precise number of bricks required. It was going well until they suddenly found they were missing 20,000 transparent bricks for the T2’s windows. They were forced to work from morning to night and over the weekends in order to complete it in time for its unveiling at the leisure and travel fair in Munich, Germany, which runs from February 20 to 24.
