Legends of the Autobahn is an event that represents German automotive engineering. While BMW held a large presence at the event, Audi and Mercedes had quite a showing as well. However, BMW had quite the number of surprises up their sleeve for this years event, including the decision to show one of three M3 GTRs to the public: This is the first time the car has been shown to the public since 2001 and it’s first time stateside! It was a special moment, indeed.
Perhaps even more special was the sound of Bill Auberlen hitting the rev limiter in the IMSA M3 GTR. Keep in mind, this event was held at a golf course! And who could forget the incredible Z4 GT3? If you’ve never seen this car in person, it’s quite the eye catcher.
Representing Mercedes was an impressive lineup of 190 SLs, as well as a very unique 500 SL rally car. In full Rally specification, the SL looks very aggressive and would be a joy to see in action. There was also a particularly wonderful 220 from 1957, complete with incredible patina: its red primer peered through the baby blue paint.
It was an enjoyable event that drew quite a large crowd. In my opinion, the standout car was a completely original BMW 2002 tii by Alpina. The shade of yellow it wore looked wonderful, and it had the perfect amount of patina. According to the owner, it is one of only 90 2002 tii Alpina models ever created—and who’s to say how many there are left? If you’re a lover of all things German, make sure to stop by next year—I’m sure there will be a few more exciting surprises in store.
