As social media goes crazy over whether or not the new Land Rover Defender is worthy of its historic name, there’s one thing we know for sure: that the new LEGO Technic version of the Defender is beyond reproach.
It was launched alongside the New Defender at the Frankfurt Motor Show, though you might have spotted early pictures of it released in error a few weeks ahead of the long-awaited reveal of the full-size Defender. Anyway, the 2573-piece LEGO Technic model definitely looks the part, and it comes with four-wheel drive with three differentials, fully independent suspension, a working winch and what’s said to be LEGO Technic’s most sophisticated gearbox yet.
Of course it’s the three-door 90 version of the new Defender that LEGO has chosen, complete with an opening case mounted on the roof rack, a ladder and the side-mounted storage pod, also with opening doors. The workings of the transmission can be clearly seen, and the amount of detail inside and out is impressive. The new set will be released on October 1 and will retail for £169.99 in the UK, $199.99 in the USA.
