Few things stir the soul quite like the visual echoes of motorsport’s golden eras. At the eighth round of the 2026 IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship this weekend, the sprawling, park-like landscape of Road America will serve as a canvas for one of the most successful partnerships in racing history. As Porsche celebrates 75 years of motorsports, and Team Penske marks its 60th anniversary, the two powerhouses are bridging the gap between their storied past and the cutting-edge present.
When the grid forms at Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin, the factory team’s pair of 707 PS (520 kW) Porsche 963 hybrid prototypes will again abandon their standard colors. After sporting historic designs earlier this season at Sebring, Long Beach, and Laguna Seca, the prototypes will take to the track with two deeply nostalgic liveries honoring the legendary machines that paved the way.
The Sunoco Beast: 1973 Porsche 917/30
Car No. 6 will arrive draped in the iconic blue and yellow Sunoco colors of the 1973 Porsche 917/30. There was simply no getting around this machine during the 1973 Canadian-American Challenge Cup (Can-Am) season. Driven by legendary racing driver and engineer Mark Donohue, the 917/30 was an absolute terror on the tarmac, producing up to 1,200 PS (882 kW). Donohue dominated the series, winning seven of the season’s nine races in a row behind the wheel of the Sunoco Porsche.
His strength was particularly undeniable at Road America’s 200-mile event. During qualifying on the 4.08-mile circuit, Donohue clocked a blistering lap time of 1m:57.51s, becoming the first driver to break the two-minute lap time barrier at the track and putting himself more than three seconds ahead of his closest competitor.
Kévin Estre, who will pilot the No. 6 Porsche 963, recognizes the weight of the colors he is carrying: “I’m really looking forward to Road America. I haven’t raced there in 10 years – and never in a prototype. We all have many memories associated with the Sunoco colors of the Porsche 917/30 from back then. That car was a real beast. I hope we’ll be just as successful. I have a special yellow helmet design. With it, I’m following in the footsteps of Mark Donohue. It’s an honor for me.”
The Giant Killer: Porsche RS Spyder
Taking the grid alongside it will be the No. 7 sister car, wrapped in the striking yellow DHL livery of the Porsche RS Spyder from the 2000s. The 1,700-lb. RS Spyder defined the LMP2 class of the American Le Mans Series (ALMS) from late 2005 through 2008. By the end of the joint Porsche-Penske program, the lightweight prototype had secured three manufacturers’ championships, along with three titles each in the drivers’ and teams’ standings.
Its crowning achievement at Elkhart Lake came on August 11, 2007, during a four-hour race where it had already racked up 14 class victories. Drivers Timo Bernhard and Romain Dumas managed to defeat the nominally more powerful LMP1 prototypes, claiming the car's first ALMS overall victory.
Felipe Nasr, tasked with driving the No. 7 car, shared his anticipation: “Competing in the colors of the Porsche RS Spyder is something very special. It allows us to commemorate an extremely successful chapter in the history of Porsche and Penske. Everyone on our team is proud of it. I’m sure we’ll win the hearts of the fans as well.”
Endurance Racing at Its Purest
Road America, situated roughly 15 miles west of Lake Michigan, is a driver favorite known for its natural flow and 14 sweeping turns across 4.048 miles of asphalt. Porsche is the most successful manufacturer at the circuit with 17 victories, including a win for the Porsche Penske Motorsport 963 during the 2024 season. Since the introduction of the LMDh regulations in 2023, the 963 has stood as the most successful race car in its class.
For the 2026 season, the IMSA race at Road America expands to a six-hour format for the first time, joining the Michelin Endurance Cup alongside legendary endurance events at Daytona, Sebring, Watkins Glen, and Petit Le Mans at Road Atlanta.
