Scale models do more than just miniaturize the subject at (or in this case, in) hand, and the purposes they serve stretch almost to the limits of what their full-size counterparts can offer, barring the ability to use them for their core function; we can’t drive the cars that fit on our desks, but we can collect more of them, customize them, share our enthusiasm for them with the like-minded, or just stare and appreciate their shapes.

Look at how vast the world of model cars really is, how many boxes they check off the car enthusiast list: you’ve got your younglings playing the rights-of-passage game of race driver/getaway wheelman/sheriff giving chase on the floor thanks to 1:64-scale Matchboxes, Hot Wheels, Corgis, Tomicas, et al, teenagers starting up small collections of more detailed 1:43 versions of the cars they wish they could buy with their summer job paychecks; and then you come to the adults with mortgages and families and glass cases of some choice 1:18th replicas of the cars they’ve idolized since acquiring the first stocking stuffer 99-cent rendition. This is to say nothing of model cars’ important role in the design of vehicles that have yet to exist outside of CAD programs and clay blocks.

The consumer/hobbyist/collector side of the scale-model world is large enough, and the range of quality and attention to detail available in that market is nearly as wide as the one for real cars. From disproportionate plastic junk churned out in vast factories to handmade pieces made by one pair of hands and a large set of magnifying lenses, they all have their place whether it be mashed into the carpet or under lights and an acrylic case. Today we’re happy to announce the start of our collaboration with the Amalgam Collection to offer examples of the latter.

We visited the company’s headquarters and workshop last fall and were promptly blown away by the quality (you can read about that and view the photos here). For the selection carried in the Petrolicious Shop, we’ve chosen cars that represent a wide spread of eras, manufacturers, and purposes, in a mixture of 1:18 and 1:8-scale models. We’re also proud to note that two of the cars in our selection are exclusively available through Petrolicious: the Porsche 356A Speedster and the Ferrari 330 P4.
