Great Video and brought back happy memories of my Dad’s 1971 Scimitar GTE also in red, with me squeezed in the back as a 7 year old along with my brother, mum and dad and our dog on the way to our caravan on the Kent coast. Life seemed so much simpler then! A cool car in the 70’s and equally cool even now.
Great to see a piece on the Scimitar. Having been a young kid in the 70’s with a one track mind for cars, I enjoyed spotting a purple Scimitar every day on the way to school. I could never quite put my finger on what it was about the Scimitar that drew my attention but as Dave points out it is a rather unique machine, especially compared to all the other cars in period (I still have nightmares about beige/burnt umber Austin Princesses & Allegros).
I had a friend at University who had a Scimitar at a time when most of us got around on push bikes, in my eyes he was immediately cool. The car blends a mix of mystique, a great sounding engine and no doubt, rather a lot of practicality – the only other car I can think of that has similar attributes, also in period, was the Lotus Elite which was another spot on my daily drive to school. Sadly you don’t seem to see them about anymore (does fibre glass rot?), so if anyone is willing to do a feature here I’d be very happy!
Up until now I had never actually made the connection between the Scimitar and the Robin Reliant but now from the rear end view of the Scimitar its all too clear!!!! Happily that’s probably about all they have in common!
Awesome piece. I had no idea about the Scimitar. I’ll bet Dave surprises lots of folks with what it can do.
I have always been a fan of Tourings. My first was a Volvo 245 Manual, on to an A6 Avant Quattro, and an E91 328xi. Unfortunately, all of the SUV buying, mouth breathing lemmings here in the States are killing the wagon. Sigh.
Happy 50th to the three of you this year!
