What’s Your Favorite Vintage Car Movie Scene?

If you’re like us, cars in movies are often bigger than the actors or even the plot.  You love to watch old movies and catch glimpses of your favorite vintage cars.  We’d like to find out what is your favorite movie scene featuring a vintage car and why.

Here’s how Afshin Behnia, Petrolicious founder/CEO and incurable Alfista, answers the question:

“I simply love the light-hearted car chase scene in The Marseille Contract* where Michael Caine driving a brown Alfa Romeo Montreal is playfully chasing Maureen Kerwin in a Porsche 911 Targa.  Everything in this scene screams ’70s.  It makes me want to dig out a white turtleneck and a tweed jacket and go looking for adventure in some mountain road.”

gentlemen…? i do not understand the question. can there be the slightest..? le mans. steve mc queen driving THE 911. and no words spoken for what seems an hour. it was even his proper car. plus the car has been auctioned and collected 1.35 mil $ for exactly that: the opening scene. this year we celebrate birthday no. 50. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_JlyQsWXrqA

All the Mad Max films. Road Warrior really was responsible for triggering my love of cars as a kid. I grew up in a hostile environment and a mean black muscle car was going to be my ticket to freedom. Luckily I found my way out of the wastelands and into civilized society but I still have the last of the V8 interceptors tearing around somewhere in the recesses of my psyche.

The red mini in the Bourne Ultimatum is pretty hard to beat by modern standards. Of course Vanishing Point is also legendary.

2 lane black top is my favorite car movie, but my favorite car scene ever has to be the dune buggy scene where steve mcqueen scares the living hell out of faye dunaway in the thomas crown affair ’68

All nice choices. Discounting Grand Prix and Le Mans because they are expressly car movies, I would have to say “Ronin” contains a few of my favorite chases and stunts. Honorable mention goes to The Blues Brothers movie.

Any shot of John Milner’s Deuce Coupe in American Graffiti. The opening scene of Two Lane Blacktop. The Monaco race segment in Grand Prix. Every scene in Le Mans that has cars in it.

PS: free movie idea… A John le Carré-style espionage thriller that takes place during one of the classic long-distance rallies. Our hero picks up the microfilm in Prague and is double-crossed, chased by secret police, races through icy alpine routes… you get the idea. Does he make it to Monte Carlo in one piece? Is the sexy co-driver really a double-agent? Is that a real Alpine A110?

As a 5 or 6 year old kid I remember loving the chase scene in Condorman. Condormans camouflaged beater camper that turned into a weaponized Condor rocket car are what kids dreams are made of but it was the menacing black 911 Porsche’s that I loved even more. I just looked it up on youtube and it’s just as awesome and 80’s as I remembered.

lambo muira + suave euro + exquisite swiss scenery + great matt monro song = unbeatable !

As I have an incurable love for the Ferrari Daytona, two trashy seventies movies stand out. The Swiss Conspiracy has a chase scene between two Daytona Spyders one driven by David Janssen and Senta Berger. I couldn’t find the scene on you tube but the whole movie can be found on the web with a quick google.

The second Daytona movie is even more obscure. Lady Ice is a knock off of the Thomas Crown Affair with Donald Sutherland and Jennifer O’Neill. O’Neill drives a Maserati Ghibli Spyder throughout the movie, but to get her attention Sutherland steals it. O’Neill gives chase in a handily parked Daytona Berlinetta. Can’t find this one on You Tube either.
