Just Because: Remembering Porsche’s Ultimate Front-Engined Sports Car

The Porsche 968 Club Sport isn’t a performance car you often see. It’s essentially the most driver-focused version of the company’s near-classic front engine, rear-drive lineup, and through a limited production run it won fans around the world for its balance and speed.

Think of it as a front-engine, 4-cylinder-powered “GT3 RS”, and you wouldn’t be too far off. The two-seat trackday-focused special dropped 220 lbs from the standard 968, along with a host of structural, mechanical, and aesthetic improvements. There were a few hotter turbocharged variants from Porsche, but those are unicorn-grade curiosities and were never entered into series production.

Photographer Richard Warburton doesn’t normally shoot cars, but his assortment of crisp and engaging Club Sport photos pretty much instantly sent us searching for the nearest 968. What do you think of these Club Sport variants?

This Porsche 928 Club Sport has always been a dream to own. Not many around though…even less for sale.

I still prefer the original lines of the 944 to the smoothed over design of the 968. Great engine in the 968, although the 944 turbo has much more power potential – too bad that the 968 turbos remained unicorns

Funny thing, the CS was the cheaper version of the 968. The aim was to compete with the E36 M3 which was more powerful (286bhp vs 240) and less expensive. Therefore Porsche stripped out 50kg mainly from the confort in order to improve the behavior and reduce the price! Something truly unbelievable today from them!!!

Concerning the turbo version, 16 were built, 14 sold on the at least 50 scheduled. It was an homologated version for the race car. So quite close to it actualy.
A friend of mine who’s a former automotive journalist had the opportunity to drive one at Weissach. He described it as “insane” and more efficient than… well, you know…
