McLaren seems to have upped the stakes in the LEGO car-building stakes, with this full-size Senna made from almost half a million separate pieces. It took nearly 5000 hours to build; in that time, nine real Sennas could have been hand-assembled. And, incredibly, it weighs 1700kg, which is 500kg more than the real car.

It’s possible to climb into the LEGO Senna, sit behind the steering wheel and push the start button in the roof, at which point the model emits a simulation of the engine starting. The lights and even the infotainment system work, and the carbon-fibre driving seat, steering wheel, pedals, badges and the wheels and tyres all come from a real Senna. The dihedral doors are made from LEGO and are removable to allow people access to the cabin.

If you want the full figures, then we can tell you that 467,854 individual LEGO elements were used in the Senna model’s construction (that’s almost 200,000 more bricks than were used to construct the 720S model of two years ago). Teams of up to ten modelmakers spent 2725 hours to assemble it, which compares with 300 hours for a real Senna to be built. And actually, if you including design and development, it took a total of 4935 hours and 42 men and women from the LEGO build team to create the model Senna.

The LEGO Senna is finished in Victory Grey with contrasting orange highlights. If you’re thinking you could do with something a touch more affordable, there is at least a 15cm-long, 219-piece, McLaren Senna LEGO Speed Champions edition available at $14.99 (£12.99). If you want to see this full-size LEGO Senna, then it will be at a number of events throughout 2019, including the Goodwood Festival of Speed in Sussex, UK, in early July.

I must be one of the few, but I never *got” LEGO. I loved making models as a kid and Mechano, but LEGO was just………………meh 🙁
