These Are The Simple Joys Of Touring In A Vintage Alfa Romeo

Classic cars can make an ordinary day a special one. They have the power to transmute the country road in your backyard into the perfect, romantic, grand touring trip you’ve always dreamed of. When thinking about GT cars, I believe a lot of people imagine fast, two lane roads stretching on through the countryside.

I used to think so, but after touring in a 1962 Alfa Romeo Giulietta SS Bertone on the outskirts of Brescia, I just changed my mind. I must admit, I was initially skeptical about taking out such a refined piece of engineering onto a dusty road with—heaven forbid—the chance to earn some stone chips, but the owner just let me hop in, telling me to freely enjoy myself.

We all know it’s quick, sleek-looking, sexy, and the list goes on. But for this short journey, I’d rather talk about the afternoon. I have to say that it was one of the most exhilarating rides I’ve had in ages. I had an empty road in front of me, warm weather, and enough stretch to let the angry 1.3-liter engine rev freely.

Aside from a bunch of cool old Landini tractors along the way, we had no other encounters with motorists; the Giulietta was really happy to take on the road alone. It was one of those experiences every motoring enthusiast wants to have.

As a Brescia native, this experience confirmed my theory that you do not always have to drive too far for an epic drive. In fact, you can just have your own in your backyard! Rides like this one confirm that classic cars can make your daily life more exciting.

Don’t be afraid to use your toys: enjoy them, and do not worry about wearing them out. Fifty years later, and this car is still in great shape, and it’s no exception. What’s not to love?

I couldn’t agree more with this,I am a life long car junkie and Alfa Romeo enthusiast I have a 750 spider veloce,I am also fortunate to live in an area of fabulous quiet country lanes perfect for the spider and I really enjoy just going out for 30 or 40 miles brightens up my life!

I thought this car would be my retirement classic. Nobody cared about Alfas any more I said in the 90’s, and there are few sexier cars in this world than Bertone’s Sprint Speciale so I watched, and waited, and forget it, over $100k.
Well so much for my dream garage of 1750GTV and SS, Minchia!!

I just saw one of these beauties here in the Chicago area at the monthly Coffee & Classics last Sunday.

I fell in love as soon as I saw it. Being a professional photographer, I took some lovely images of it as well.

Wonderful car. When my wife was pregnant with our first child, we would visit her obgyn in Newport Beach. One of his fellows dd’d and parked his Sprint Veloce there. Seeing it (and occasionally hearing it) was the highlight of my visit, anyway.
