Concours are helped immeasurably when they’re situated next to Lake Como, attract vehicles you can’t really see anywhere else, and have enough clout to attract even modern-day design houses to unveil new cars.

What began at the Grand Hotel Villa d’Este in 1929 continues today at Villa d’Este. Classes included “Pre-War Decadence”, “Pre-War Supercars”, “Cars of the Stars,” and “From Glam Rock To New Wave”—that last one featured both the rare Lamborghini Countach LP 400 “Walter Wolf” and the Ferrari Testarossa Spider we love so much.

Highlights for us here at Petrolicious include the searing yellow 1951 Pegaso Z-102 (winner of the “Young People’s Referendum”), the entire class of rally car entrants, and the svelte 1964 Abarth-Simca 1300 GT Corsa. Best in show from the jury went to a 1932 Alfa Romeo 8C 2300, while the public voted a green 1950 Ferrari 166 MM as its pick.

Which of these cars would you have awarded “Best in Show?”

More photos capturing the atmosphere would be nice but the biggest problem is that the winners you write about are last years. This year the jury picked a Maserati and the Copa d’oro went to a Lancia

No place more beautiful than Lake Como especially with what looked like good weather, but am I missing shots of the Best of Show winners?

I dropped in on Sunday for the public display at Villa Erba next door. Third time I have managed to make it. Yes, there have been some pretty special cars in the past but it is also nice to see the odd car that might just be in the grasp of mere mortals rubbing shoulders with cars that are well beyond the reach of all but the wealthiest. All in all, it was a lovely day with some fabulous machinery on display in one of the most stunning of settings. I thought it was a spectacular success yet again. Great pictures. Well captured.

i was there saturday… i personally think that in this year the quality of the cars was lower than in the orher years…a 850 moretti, a ferrari 330, and a countach, couldn’t be allowed in the past years… i voted the lancia astura berlinetta castagna, because was never seen in villa d’este… but fortunatly the best of the show is the maserati a6gcs c designed by my uncle Aldo in1952.

Finally ! I was hoping y’all’d do a feature on the Vd’E .

Great photos both in quality and selection … though a little more emphasis on the M/C side of things would of been appreciated . Perhaps another article featuring that side of the Vd’E Mr Scott ?

But err …. is it just me … or does there appear to be something missing from this years Villa de’Este Concours ? I just can’t put my finger on it . I dunno … perhaps a bit of sheen … an absence of panache ? … the idea they’ve may of done this a few too many times now taking things for granted ? …. perhaps a bit more corporate presence than may be considered healthy ? Hmm … hard to say . Maybe it is just me … but I kind of don’t think so .. at least from what I’ve seen and heard so far
Hmmm ……

What’s missing is what the camera didn’t capture, a fuller sense of the festive atmosphere. I think Classic Driver did a better job of it.
