What Is Your Favorite Wedge Car?

I have to admit, I have been on a wedge kick of late. After getting up close and personal for the filming of the Ferrari 208 GT4 recently, I have been finding myself taking a closer look and gaining a deeper appreciation for the design.

Picking my favorite from all of the amazing wedges that have been produced from the ’60s to ’80s is hard. There are few cars that have literally stopped me in my tracks when I have seen them in person and two of those cars were wedges. The first being the Lamborghini Countach and the second is the BMW M1. I almost always side with anything BMW but the sheer amount of influence the Countach had over my the development of my love for cars is hard to ignore. I submit both of them to you as my favorites.

For me the BMW M1 and then the whole Pinifarina designed 308, 512BB, Testarossa/512TR etc.

I remember people being scandalised by the pronounced wedginess of the W201 Mercedes 190 when it came out. It doesn’t look so noticeable now, but that’s because it set the trend to design all sedans this way. Still love that design.

M1. Since it basically is a Lamborghini body (briefly!) with an awesome and reliable engine, it may have been the first practical super car. The first gen Lamborghini is gorgeous to look at, and probably is the most striking wedge design, later cars not so much with flares and spoilers. The lotus esprit is nice too, till you look inside! All that puffy leather. The stratos is perversely beautiful,like a shiny pair of brass knuckles.

I think the strato’s is the best wedge car ever made… However I own a 308 GT4 and I am just in love with it. 🙂

Between the two, it’d be hard to deny my Bimmer-phile roots, but I just can’t say no to how silly and awesome the Countach is.

If we’re including interiors, can we get a slow-clap for the Subaru XT?

When I post its gotta be to talk about one of 2 things:
1º – How much VW cars are boring;
2º- The love I have for Citroëns, especially for the BX.

Being clear ’bout that, want wedge? The BX was design by Marcello Gandini (as the Lambo Countach and others…)

Your money? Stratos (but I’m too big) and S2 Esprit.

My money? TR-7/8 and the X/9.

If the late ’70s cars get smog-exempted in CA, I’d have a hard time keeping from doing either a Honda-engined X/9 or a (I will find a way!) Alfa V-6 powered TR-7 roadster. With bigger brakes.

I would go with the 308 GT4. I prefer the later ‘series 2’ versions to the 208 in the film with the full width front grille and 5 spoke Cromadora alloys. In fact I’m off to surf the classifieds now.

Not a production car but my alltime favorite from this era was the Lamborghini Bravo showcar. I don’t know how to attach a photo but a quick google search will show you why I love it.

Difficult one. It’s either the Fiat X1/9 or the Matra Murena. Both affordable, so I actually have a chance of owning them, and both stunning little machines.

I see X1/9’s running around every once in a while here in LA and they always put a smile on my face. I find myself generally gravitating toward cars that are affordable and I could own one day.

I tend to gravitate towards the cheaper end of the scale too, but plan builds and modifications that cost multiple of what the cars are worth. With the Matra I’d see if I could source a turbo from a Peugeot 505 as I believe they had the same Simca base engine. For the X1/9, I’d see whether I could swap in a hot Fiat Twincam, maybe from a late Lancia Thema or something Abarth-related. Both relatively simple modifications as my plans go.
