Sometimes it’s easy to forget Saab built a sports car, perhaps because it looked so much more conventional than their sedans. The Swedish company made two attempts before Americans embraced the Sonett III that appeared in 1970. By the end of its reign in 1974, 8,368 of the fiberglass, front-wheel drive Sonett IIIs were built.

This 1971 Sonett III is an early-’71 version with the smaller 1,498 Ford Taunus V4, which wasn’t encumbered by emissions equipment like the 1.7L that replaced it mid-year. It has been refinished in its original Emerald Green color, which is complemented nicely by its unique tan, corduroy seats which are said to be “100% original and in great condition.” The manual rack-and-pinion steering and transverse wishbone independent suspension earned raves from the enthusiast press back in the day, and its dual-circuit braking system (handled by 10.5-inch Lockheed front discs and eight-inch rear drums) was several steps above what could be found on American performance cars of the period. Equipped with Tuneverken alloy wheels, and sporting just 57,000 miles and the original bill of sale, this Swede is ready for the next collector who eschews, “Me, too!”

That Sonett has been for sale for at least 3 years. They just aren’t worth a lot of money. Which can be a bad thing for investors but good for enthusiasts with a limited budget.
